‘Very talented’: Manager hails ‘brilliant’ player he’s signed from Man United

The ‘very, very talented’ Teden Mengi is already in line for a Premier League debut after impressing Luton Town boss Rob Edwards following his departure from Manchester United.

The former England U20 international did not make a single top-flight appearance in his 15 years as a Manchester United player. It could take him less than three weeks to earn a Premier League bow in the colours of his new team, however; Teden Mengi making quite the impression after swapping the Red Devils for newly-promoted Luton Town in the final 24 hours of the summer transfer window.

“‘T’ has trained really well,” smiles Hatters boss Edwards, speaking to Luton Today. “We brought ‘T’ in, obviously for the here and now, but also for the long-term future as well.

“He’s a fantastic age, he’s a real physical specimen as well. He’s looking really, really good at the moment.”

Teden Mengi thriving after Manchester United
Edwards is understandably wary of throwing Mengi straight in at the deep end. Especially after that the Manchester-born defender returned from a niggling hamstring injury which scuppered his hopes of making a name for himself at his hometown club.

Though an excellent week on the training pitch appears to have eased Edwards’ concerns somewhat; Luton hoping to pick up their first points of the new campaign away at Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

“He’s looking very, very good,” adds the former Watford boss. “And he’s certainly in the mix. If he consistently trains as well as he has been, he has to be in the mix for selection because he’s looked very, very good.

“But I’ll repeat, again, he’s a young player, one or two injuries in his recent past so the pressure’s not there as much to have to come in straight away and perform.”

‘Very, very talented’
Edwards, who ran the rule over Mengi’s former United team-mate Axel Tuanzebe before his move to Ipswich Town, believes the 21-year-old is capable of playing anywhere in Luton’s three-man backline, either on the right or the left.

That versatility, Edwards explains, was one of the key reasons why Luton were ‘really keen’ to sign Mengi in the first place.

“He’s a very, very talented young player. Athletically, (Mengi) looks brilliant,” Edwards finishes. “And he’s really going to suit us.”
