Just In: Another West Ham star signs new contract to stay at London Stadium

Michail Antonio signs new West Ham United contract until 2025.
Michail Antonio has signed a new contract with West Ham United to extend his stay until 2025, with the option of another year according to Sean Whetstone.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (18 September), the editor of 6foot2 reports that the Jamaica international has put pen to paper on a fresh deal, with his previous one due to expire in June 2024.

Antonio was seemingly on the verge of an exit from the London Stadium this summer with links to the likes of Saudi Arabia, Everton, Celtic and Leeds, but he ended up staying at the club and has started the season in fine form.

“Hammer Michail Antonio has signed a new 12-month extension to his current contract plus a 12-month option,” they wrote.

“He put pen to paper two weeks ago after the transfer window closed.”

Good news

Antonio may be ageing at this point, but he’s still by far and away our best striker option and has shown that with his early form.

He has started all our league games so far and performed excellently, continuing to prove that you don’t have to score goals to have a good game as a striker.

His tireless and wilfull running of the channels means he always gives 100% to the shirt and the fans appreciate that, even though his quality in front of goal can sometimes be lacking when it’s needed most.

But by tying him to a new deal we have secured his future for the final years of his career at the top level, and we now know that if he is to decline and wants to be moved on or we need to move him on we can at least command a fee.

The important thing is that it removes the uncertainty around his future while he’s a key player in the team and his future is back in our hands, so it’s great business from the club to get him to stick around.
