Newcastle United confirm another injury blow as fantastic star now withdrawn from national team

Alexander Isak withdraws from Sweden squad in major Newcastle United injury blow.
Newcastle United have been dealt a major injury blow with Alexander Isak forced to withdraw from international duty.

Alexander Isak has withdrawn from the Sweden squad after sustaining an injury during Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

Isak scored twice as the Magpies came from behind to lead at the London Stadium but signalled to come off before Mohammed Kudus netted an 89th minute equaliser.

United head coach Eddie Howe had his “fingers crossed” that Isak was OK. However, after being examined by the Swedish national team’s medical team earlier today, the 24-year-old has left the camp.

A statement read: “Alexander Isak leaves the men’s national team’s European Championship qualifying squad.

“The Newcastle striker came to the gathering with an injury report from Sunday’s match against West Ham and underwent an examination by the Swedish national team’s medical team on Monday.

“After that, it is clear that Alexander Isak is not available for games next week and will miss the European Championship qualifier against Belgium next Monday.

“Very sad for Alexander Isak and for us, says national team captain Janne Andersson.

“At present, it is not appropriate to call in a replacement.

“Sweden meets Moldova in a friendly international match at Friends on Thursday and Belgium in Brussels on Monday 16 October.”

Isak will return to Tyneside and be assessed ahead of United’s Premier League fixture at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, October 21. The striker is the club’s top goalscorer this campaign with seven goals in all competitions.
