SAINTS defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis has been ruled out of the England under-21 squad due to a new injury, according to the club.
Harwood-Bellis, 21, from Stockport, has started the last six Championship games for boss Russell Martin.
After a rough start at his new loan club, Harwood-Bellis has formed a relationship with Jan Bednarek, allowing only two goals in their last three games.
Captain Jack Stephens went down with a medium-term injury in August, reducing the defensive ranks, and has yet to recover.
The Saints’ defensive situation has been complicated further by the news that Harwood-Bellis has a hamstring problem, according to talkSPORT.
“Harwood-Bellis will return to Staplewood Campus with an injury, despite being called up to England’s Under-21s,” Saints said in a statement.
“The 21-year-old was set to face Serbia and Ukraine in Lee Carsley’s side’s EURO 2025 qualifiers.”
“Harwood-Bellis has returned to the club and will be evaluated further.” In due course, an update will be issued.”
Any injury to Harwood-Bellis might pave the door for Northern Ireland international Shea Charles or Everton loanee Mason Holgate to reclaim a starting spot.
Harwood-Bellis, who signed on deadline day on loan, might become a permanent Saints player, according to the Daily Echo.
The team has a £20 million buy option on the Manchester City defender, but only if the club is promoted back to the Premier League.
