The Key Charlton Athletic players who may be leaving on a free transfer next summer

FLW looks at the Addicks players whose contracts expire in 2024.

After inheriting Dean Holden’s squad, newly appointed Charlton Athletic manager Michael Appleton may have to make some important decisions in the near future.

The January transfer market will shortly open, and Appleton may be able to make some required changes, but he also has to deal with players who will soon be out of contract.

But which players have contracts at The Valley that will expire at the conclusion of the season? Let us investigate…

Hector, who has played for 18 different clubs in his career, only signed on a short-term agreement in January, but he accomplished enough in that time frame before the end of the 2022-23 season to be offered an extension.

Hector has been a regular for Charlton so far this season, and at the age of 31, he may still have some League One experience left in him.

George Dobson

Dobson, the current Charlton player, is one of the priority contracts that SE7 Partners must finalize before the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old midfielder is one of the first names on the squad sheet, and he was desired in the summer, when moneybags League Two outfit Wrexham attempted to sign him.

However, a deal did not materialize, and Dobson has remained vital to the club’s plans for 2023-24 – it would be unfortunate if he were to leave on a free transfer next summer.

Corey Blackett-Taylor

Blackett-Taylor, like Dobson, received transfer interest late in the summer window, with Derby County keen on bringing the winger to Pride Park.

Blackett-Taylor, on the other hand, stayed at The Valley and has recently been moved from the wing-back position he was playing under Holden to being used as a more traditional winger by Appleton.

With four goals in his previous five league games, something is working for the 26-year-old, putting a new contract on the table, as with Dobson, must be a priority, especially now that Championship clubs have been linked.

Terell Thomas

Thomas, who had previously played for the Addicks, returned to the club in September but was not seen much due to injuries.

Thomas, on the other hand, has started every league game for Charlton this season and has found a spot at left-back under Appleton.

Could his performances earn him a new contract at the conclusion of the season? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Ricnhard Chi

This is a pivotal year for Chin, who, at the age of 20, may require regular playing time to establish himself.

Last season, the versatile full-back appeared intermittently for the Addicks in league and cup play, totaling 15 appearances before joining Dartford on loan at the end of the season.

Chin, on the other hand, is yet to be named to a league squad for the 2023-24 season, so he has a lot of work to do if he wants a new contract.

Deji Elewere

Another 20-year-old who is trying to get a longer deal at The Valley is Elewere, who played 11 times in the 2021-22 season as a teenager.

The centre-back spent most of last season out on loan in the National League with Wealdstone and Bromley earning experience, but with just three appearances so far this season there could be work to do.

It remains to be seen if Appleton will utilise Elewere this season, but you’d imagine he will get another contract.

Lucas Ness

Ness was acquired from non-league Met Police in 2020 and has since evolved into a League One player.

Ness broke into the first-team last season, primarily under Dean Holden, but with Michael Hector and Lloyd Jones seemingly Appleton’s preferred centre-back partnership for league games, the 21-year-old may struggle to get much playing.
