Michael Appleton was impressed with his Charlton Athletic side’s refusal to let Reading off the hook in today’s 4-0 triumph at The Valley.
Chuks Aneke, Tyreece Campbell, Alfie May, and Miles Leaburn all scored in the second half to extend the Addicks’ unbeaten run to seven League One games, six of which have come since Appleton’s appointment.
The first 45 minutes were sloppy and devoid of any meaningful significant chances.
Charlton, on the other hand, never looked back when Aneke headed his first goal of the season – and the club’s first in the league since October 2022.
The Addicks moved up to 10th in the table thanks to three assists from Corey Blackett-Taylor.
They trail sixth-placed Stevenage by four points but have two games in hand.
“It was a hard-fought one,” Appleton added. We are aware of Reading’s off-field issues at the moment, which makes them even more dangerous – since there isn’t much expectation on them.
“There’s a difference between playing with the expectation of winning every week, which is what we’ve got here.
“It was almost a belief and switch to play forward with a purpose for the lads to deal with it in the first half, once that first goal went in.”
“One of the questions we asked ourselves before the game was whether we still wanted to go out there and play on the front foot.”
