Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum playfully teased his new teammate Jrue Holiday with a lighthearted ‘old’ comment before their season-opening win against the New York Knicks.
During the game at Madison Square Garden, 25-year-old Jayson Tatum was wearing a microphone and engaged in a memorable conversation with Holiday. Tatum asked Holiday if he had played against Tracy McGrady, and upon learning that he had, Tatum humorously remarked, “So you played against T-Mac and you play with me – you’re old.”
To put Tatum’s comment in context, Tracy McGrady’s NBA career spanned from 1997 to 2013, while Tatum was drafted by the Celtics in 2017. In contrast, Jrue Holiday, aged 33, entered the league in 2009. Holiday, a two-time All-Star and five-time All-Defensive player, was acquired by the Celtics during the offseason after being traded by the Milwaukee Bucks to make room for Damian Lillard.
Despite not having a particularly strong offensive debut for the Celtics, contributing nine points and two assists, Holiday showcased his defensive prowess with three blocks and four rebounds. Tatum, on the other hand, led the Celtics with an impressive performance, accumulating 34 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. Kristaps Porzingis, another addition to the team, recorded 30 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. Ultimately, the Celtics narrowly defeated the Knicks with a final score of 108-104.
The Celtics are set to play their next game on Friday when they host the Miami Heat in their home opener.
