Victor Wembanyama makes strange history in NBA debut vs. Mavericks

The regular-season NBA debut of Victor Wembanyama against the Dallas Mavericks did not go as planned. Due to foul trouble, the highly hyped rookie and No. 1 overall pick only played 23 minutes.

Wembanyama still managed to make some NBA history in those 23 minutes, but not in the way most people imagined.

According to OpstaStats, Wembanyama scored nine points while drawing five fouls, the highest by any player in his NBA debut in the last 25 years.

Obviously, Spurs fans and Wembanyama himself would have like the stat to be “most points scored by a rookie in his debut,” but the youngster’s presence was felt even in restricted minutes.

He finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block. He did had five mistakes, but the Spurs were outplayed by a well-rounded effort by the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic, in particular, shone in his 2023-24 regular season debut, posting a 33-point triple-double while also grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists.
