Newcastle United ‘line up’ shock move for £55m Wolves favourite

In the most recent update on Premier League transfer activities, there are reports of Newcastle United showing interest in signing Rúben Neves, a former beloved player of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who is currently playing for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. The reason behind this potential move is to fill the gap left by Sandro Tonali, who Newcastle acquired for £55 million during the summer but has now been suspended from football for 10 months.

Tonali had been under investigation by the Italian Football Federation for violating betting regulations, and it has been confirmed that the 23-year-old indeed breached these rules. Consequently, he won’t be able to participate in any matches until August, which means he’ll miss the remainder of the 2023/24 season and Euro 2024.

According to reports from talkSPORT, Newcastle is contemplating a temporary loan arrangement for Neves, which would provide them with a high-quality midfield option during Tonali’s absence. Notably, the owners of Newcastle, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, hold a significant 75% stake in Neves’ current club, Al-Hilal, making the transfer process likely more straightforward.

Neves, who made a £50 million move to Saudi Arabia during the summer, previously spent six years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. During his time there, he made 253 appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals and contributing 13 assists. Many Wolves supporters regard him as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. He also has 44 senior Portugal national team caps to his name.
