Alan Shearer admits fantastic Newcastle player was ‘not at his best’ against Wolves on Saturday

Former Newcastle United icon Alan Shearer has conceded his disappointment with the performance of a particular Toon player during their match against Wolves on Saturday. The Magpies experienced a lackluster outing over the weekend, settling for a 2-2 draw against Wolves. What proved most exasperating was that Newcastle held the lead on two occasions, with Callum Wilson finding the back of the net twice. His first goal showcased his instinctive finishing ability, while the second was marred by controversy due to a questionable penalty decision by the officials.

Newcastle vs Brentford: Callum Wilson penalty gives Eddie Howe respite

Despite the contentious nature of the penalty, Wilson successfully converted it to register his seventh goal of the season, placing him back in a tie with Alexander Isak for the top spot on the Newcastle scoring charts. The 31-year-old displayed clinical finishing against Wolves, but it was far from a standout performance for Newcastle’s number nine. This perspective is shared by Alan Shearer, who critiqued Wilson’s display, all the while including him in his Premier League team of the week.

Callum Wilson ‘not at his best’ against Wolves

Shearer has revealed his squad of the week after the Premier League games this weekend. Those like Eddie Nketiah, Bernardo Silva, and Erling Haaland, who gave outstanding performances this past weekend, are obviously included.

Wilson has room as well, following his two goals against Wolves.

Shearer posted the following about Wilson on the official Premier League website: “Not at his best but continued his fine goalscoring form with another two strikes against Wolves.”

Shearer is right about Newcastle number nine

Critiquing Wilson might seem unusual despite his two-goal performance, but Shearer’s evaluation of the £20 million acquisition is accurate.

Although he wasn’t in peak form at Molineux, the Wolves’ defenders made it challenging for him to impact the game. Craig Dawson deserves credit for his solid marking of Wilson, but even he couldn’t prevent Wilson from scoring two goals.

This illustrates Wilson’s significance – he can have an off day yet still come close to securing a hat-trick. His natural goal-scoring ability highlights his pivotal role for the Magpies. It’s crucial to safeguard him during Alexander Isak’s injury absence.

At present, Wilson is the only available striker for Newcastle, so Howe must exercise caution in managing him. While he could have performed better on Saturday, he’ll aim to improve this weekend when Newcastle faces Arsenal in the Premier League. Prior to that, the Magpies have a Carabao Cup match against Manchester United at Old Trafford, but it seems probable that Wilson will be given a rest.
