The center back, who played on loan from Manchester City to Saints last summer, has started every eight of Russell Martin’s team’s Championship games thus far.

In Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Birmingham City, Harwood-Bellis netted his first goal for the team after Adam Armstrong’s ball into the box nine minutes in.

At the end of the current campaign, the England Under-21 captain’s contract at Southampton contains a clause that allows him to join the team permanently for a sum of £20 million—but only if Saints get promoted to the Premier League on their first attempt.

In an interview with the Daily Echo, he expressed interest in continuing with the team when his loan was up “If we get promoted.” Yes, without a doubt. The desire of the entire club is to return to the Premier League, and that is my goal as well.

“If that wasn’t the club’s goal, I wouldn’t have come here.” I would rip your hand off if someone told me I would be playing for Southampton in the Premier League the next season.

We have to work hard to get there, so I haven’t given it much thought yet because it’s far away. It’s a beautiful area of the world, and I’ve liked it here. I credit the staff, players, and entire organization for helping me settle here so nicely. I’m having a good time here.

As a member of Vincent Kompany’s championship-winning Burnley team last season, Harwood-Bellis was promoted to the Premier League. The defender had a lot of admirers this summer after starting 31 league games as the Clarets won the Championship.

“You don’t want to talk about last year too much because it’s over, but I think I know how to work hard every day,” he continued.

“I hope I’m leading by example, but with this team, I don’t feel like I have to because everyone puts in the necessary work. Even the boys who don’t receive many minutes understand that their turn will come, and if you watched training, you would see that everyone is eager to get going.
