Worksop Town defeated Blyth Spartans, a team in the National League North, 5-0 in a rematch on Tuesday night, putting them one win away from qualifying for the Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper.
After a competitive first half, the Tigers destroyed Blyth in the second half. Liam Hughes opened the score in the 56th minute with a strong header.
After playing a one-two with Josh Wilde and chesting down a high pass, Hughes added a second goal on 62 minutes when he blasted a shot into the bottom corner.
After Vaughan Redford passed into the center, Aleks Starcenko scored nine minutes later to put a serious dent in the visitors’ hopes.
It seemed as though Blyth had no response, and things worsened for them when Alex Mitchell took down Luke Hall nearby on minute 81. Hughes took a step forward and finished with a hat-trick.
And after some excellent work from Hughes, Starcenko completed the romping with his second in stoppage time, finding the bottom corner from just inside the area.
Following their triumph, they will take on National League North Boston United on Saturday, October 14.
“It was the ideal performance,” Craig Parry said with pride. “I believed we deserved to win.
“Some really great performances were given today. We put on perhaps one of our best performances from one to eleven, and the substitutes were even better.
“The goal scorers will receive a lot of praise, but we set them up to press as they did, force them into specific areas, and set traps, which they did brilliantly, and our ball handling won us the game tonight.”
We already know that the other National League North team, which is a hybrid model, will be incredibly well-prepared and well-organized.
“I have never concealed my desire to lead this team to the actual first round. It would represent a significant accomplishment for our close-knit group, and I want to make the occasion memorable for both the players and the supporters.”
The Tigers enter the Isuzu FA and continue to compete in cup events.
The Tigers play the Stocksbridge Park Steels at home this weekend as they prepare to compete for the Isuzu FA Trophy while also participating in cup tournaments.
Parry is expecting another close call.
Parry continued, “Stocksbridge will be a difficult game.” Over the previous few years, we have faced them on a few occasions.
“We are aware of the dangers they pose and have already seen them twice, so we know what to expect from them, but we still prefer to be at home and perform well in all events.”
