In the hopes of having national champion quarterback Stetson Bennett back up for Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford, the Los Angeles Rams selected Bennett in the 2023 NFL Draft. After Stafford was lost to injury during the season, it was critical for the Rams to have a rookie with a winning history.
But just before the season started, it was announced that Bennett would be sidelined indefinitely due to an ailment that would put him on the reserve/non-football illness list. Stafford’s backup would then be Brett Rypien. This was a distressing development because Bennett had appeared to be in good shape during the preseason. The Rams declined to provide any specifics about why he wasn’t there.
Nearing the midpoint of the regular season, Rams head coach Sean McVay provided a long-awaited update on Bennett, but sadly, that news included maybe saying goodbye to the backup quarterback’s chances of playing this year.
Yes, he’s doing just fine. Regarding his coming back with us, there aren’t really any updates, McVay stated. “It’s probably less likely than it is likely that he would be back with us this year, but I’m not ready to say that.”
Bennett’s departure from the Rams is undoubtedly a sad one for all parties, as they appeared to get along well and had great expectations for his potential. Regardless of Bennett’s personal motives for his prolonged absence, it is crucial that he attends to the matters that require attention off the field.
It appears that the Rams have secured his spot for the foreseeable future, and they eagerly anticipate seeing him return when he is prepared to do so. Until then, Rypien will trail Stafford in the lead, or perhaps a new backup.
McVay believes that RBs can return as soon as they’re eligible.
Ronnie Rivers and Kyren Williams, two more Rams backs, are still out due to various lower leg injuries. However, McVay is optimistic that both will come off injured reserve as soon as they are cleared to do so.
I’m hoping so. Like you mentioned, I believe that the first reason is that it’s still a little early, but there was discussion about whether or not we should even proceed with that given that Kyren was aware that the purchase falls in between and that it still doesn’t count as one of the four games you have to miss. That would be the objective with him, without a doubt. As for Ronnie, we’re hopeful about him, but we’ll have to wait and see how he recovers from his knee injury.
