Newcastle crushed Manchester United in the Carabao Cup fourth round, recording a historic triumph.
Eddie Howe acknowledges that it took “everything” for Newcastle to upset rival Manchester United handily on Wednesday night in their Carabao Cup match.
At Old Trafford, goals from Lewis Hall and Joe Willock gave the Magpies a historic victory that advanced them to the competition’s quarterfinals. Miguel Almiron had started the score for the Magpies.
In addition to getting one over the team they had frequented in the 1990s, Newcastle also exacted retribution for their loss to United in the previous season’s championship game.
Newcastle supporters were ecstatic to have their team win so handily at Old Trafford, and in his post-match interview, Howe acknowledged that the rivalry gave their victory a deeper meaning.
“It means everything to us and hopefully to them (the fans),” he declared at the news conference held following the match. “At the conclusion, the response was evident. They were aware that we were going through a difficult period and making adjustments, but occasionally that strengthens our bond. That is elevated by players like Matt Ritchie, whose performance was excellent.”
Although his team had a two-goal lead going into halftime, Howe says he never had any other ideas than to play offensive football, which presented a challenge.
“Be brave and optimistic and keep doing the things that have made us successful was the message at halftime,” he continued. Here, I have witnessed a lot of games where the audience had the winning edge.”
