Breaking news: Falcons star reacts to being benched for Week 9 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings

Desmond Ridder displayed a level-headed reaction to Taylor Heinicke being named the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons in their Week 9 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Despite the Falcons going through a rough patch, they still hold the top spot in the NFC South division. As they gear up to face the Vikings, there has been a shift in their starting quarterback position, with Desmond Ridder stepping into the backup role and Taylor Heinicke assuming the lead role. Remarkably, Ridder is embracing his new position with a positive and mature attitude, despite his demotion.

Desmond Ridder will stay ready for action despite not starting

In a post-practice interview before Sunday’s game, Ridder shared his perspective on Atlanta’s decision regarding his playing status, stating, “I’m eager to be on the field, but ultimately, decisions are made. We’re now focused on [Week 9] against Minnesota, and I understand that I may be called upon at any moment, so I must stay prepared,” as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The young quarterback, in his second year, also expressed his willingness to support the starting QB while on the sideline. This demonstrates Ridder’s commitment to Atlanta’s success. While he clearly aspires to be the starting QB, he is currently prioritizing readiness for whenever the coaching staff requires his services. Head coach Arthur Smith’s response regarding the lead QB position remained uncertain, especially after Taylor Heinicke’s impressive performance in Week 8, filling in for Ridder, who had to leave the game due to concussion protocols. Heinicke managed to throw for 175 yards and one touchdown, despite having limited action in the 2023-24 season until that game. With both Heinicke and Ridder now available, Atlanta hopes to utilize their combined talents as they aim to rise in the NFC South.
