Matt Targett is expected to be absent from Newcastle United’s upcoming Premier League clash with Arsenal on Saturday evening. During the recent Carabao Cup match against Manchester United, the left-back, who had only made his third start of the 2023-24 season, suffered a hamstring injury within the first three minutes of the game. As a result, Miguel Almiron stepped in as his replacement and contributed to the team’s victory, with goals from Lewis Hall and Joe Willock helping the Magpies secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Providing an update on Targett’s condition during his pre-Arsenal press conference, manager Howe expressed concerns about the injury, stating, “I don’t think it looks good, but he’s scheduled for a scan today, so we will have more information after that. Whenever a player is forced to leave the field due to a hamstring injury, it’s natural to have some apprehension, but we’ll have a clearer picture after the scan.”
Targett’s absence adds to Newcastle’s growing list of unavailable players, which currently includes a total of nine individuals. Here is the full list of absentees:
1. Sandro Tonali – August 2024 After the Italian Football Federation opened an inquiry into illicit betting, Tonali was given a 10-month suspension from football.
2. Chelsea (H) – Alexander Isak – 25/11
The Swede’s groin issue returned, forcing him to leave the game after just 14 minutes against Dortmund. Isak had a scan, and he won’t be back until the earliest international break in November.
3. Jacob Murphy (unknown)
It’s expected that Murphy’s injured shoulder during his match against Dortmund would require surgery.
4. N/A for Sven Botman
Due to a knee problem, Botman has missed the last seven games. The Dutchman’s return date is now unknown while Newcastle waits for more information regarding his injury.
5. Borussia Dortmund (A) – Lewis Miley – 07/11
Due to glandular fever, Miley will probably be out of commission for at least another week.
6. In late December, Harvey Barnes
After suffering a foot injury during last month’s 8-0 triumph against Sheffield United, Barnes won’t be able to play again until late December.
7. Late in December, Elliot Anderson
Following the defeat to Dortmund, it was revealed that Anderson’s back issue—which is expected to keep him out for eight weeks—was the reason he was absent from the match.
8. Javier Manquillo – N/A Howe disclosed that the Spainard is suffering from a groin problem before the Carabao Cup match against Manchester United.
