Marti Cifuentes makes exciting claim key Star amid recent QPR struggles

It seems that Willock will have a new head coach in Cifuentes who will play the style he prefers to play.

As the new head coach of Queens Park Rangers, Marti Cifuentes has a lot of work ahead of him, chief among them being pulling the team out of the Championship relegation zone.

He still needs to get something from Chris Willock, the maverick who is currently only a ghost of the player we have seen wearing a Hoops shirt.

Along with the diminutive Ilias Chair, Willock was a creative threat under Mark Warburton in the 2021–22 season, contributing to 18 league goals overall. Following his recovery from a season-ending hamstring injury during the preseason, the attacker returned in the 2022–23 campaign with six goals from his first nine Championship appearances, with Mick Beale providing him with creative freedom.

However, the 25-year-old was not as productive under Neil Critchley and Gareth Ainsworth, and by the end of the previous campaign, Willock was hardly playing. This season, the situation is similar, as Willock has only started three of his nine league games.

Willock had less than a year left on his Loftus Road contract at the beginning of the 2023–24 season, and curiously, there wasn’t much buzz in the rumor mill about other teams being interested in signing him.

Although Willock has demonstrated his peak performance, it hasn’t been witnessed in more than a year, which may have turned off potential purchasers.

Willock will also only have six months left on his contract when the January transfer window opens, meaning he will either be playing for a new contract under a new head coach or he will be using the remaining months on his current contract and leaving for pastures fresh in 2024 summer.

To generate interest, Willock might need to demonstrate something first, and there’s a strong possibility that will happen under Cifuentes.

Regarding Chris Willock’s future at QPR, what has Marti Cifuentes stated?

Given that he hasn’t played much and hasn’t been one of Ainsworth’s favorites, Willock is likely lacking confidence after the first few months of the season.

But, Cifuentes has informed football reporter Tony Incenzo that he is a huge fan of Willock’s skills and that he wants to see the former Arsenal player play at his peak, which some would argue was at the beginning of last season, so now might be the moment for the winger’s comeback.

Though every QPR supporter wants to see the Willock of the 2021–22 campaign and the beginning of the previous season return, Cifuentes could be able to enhance him with his approach to the game and by placing an arm around him.
