Baseball Fan Sues Atlanta Braves and Jorge Soler for 2021 World Series Incident

During the 2021 World Series, a fan named Mayra Morris suffered injuries to her face when she was struck by a baseball allegedly thrown by MLB player Jorge Soler, who was with the Atlanta Braves at the time. This incident has led to a lawsuit against Soler and the Braves. According to Morris and her husband’s complaint filed on October 25 in Cobb County Superior Court, the incident caused significant damage to Morris’s eye socket and resulted in severe injuries, including broken bones. The lawsuit accuses Soler and the Braves of behaving recklessly and dangerously. Morris’s attorney, Susan Shaw, emphasized that this wasn’t a typical situation of a player tossing a souvenir ball; instead, Soler threw the ball with great force and speed, leaving no time for Morris to react.

After being hit, Morris received medical treatment, incurring roughly $60,000 in expenses. The Braves ultimately won the 2021 World Series against the Houston Astros, with Soler being named World Series MVP. Following that season, Soler joined the Miami Marlins and had a productive 2023 season, with impressive stats. According to the Marlins’ then-general manager Kim Ng, Soler’s performance improved significantly, thanks to the team’s hitting staff.
