There’s another aspect looming over the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 9 matchup with the Miami Dolphins, in addition to the tales of conference supremacy and foreign locale. Tyreek Hill, a wide receiver, will play alongside the Chiefs on the field for the first time since his trade last spring. But not as a teammate. On Sundays, he is an adversary.
Nevertheless, the relationship between Kansas City and their former star wide receiver appears to be mostly amicable. Tyreek Hill, the former Chiefs player, recently spoke positively about his time with the franchise. He expressed his enjoyment of his tenure with the team and even hinted at delivering an impressive performance in the upcoming crucial matchup. However, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid chose not to engage in these comments and instead praised Hill for his continued productivity, even as he enters his eighth season. Reid commented on Friday, “Yeah, how great is he? He’s a heck of a player, and they’ve got a few of those. They’ve got a couple of great players on that team offensively and defensively. Tyreek we’re familiar with — he’s been doing this a long time at a very high level, and he hasn’t slowed down. He’s putting up great numbers. Our guys know that. It’s a great challenge for us and our secondary to work against him. That’s what we’re practicing for.”
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared a similar sentiment to Coach Reid’s, describing Hill as his “brother” and someone he had “built a strong relationship” with during Hill’s time with the Chiefs. The trade not only allowed Hill to secure the contract he desired and be closer to his home, but it also provided Kansas City with a multitude of draft picks that played crucial roles in the team’s journey to Super Bowl LVII. This trade stands out as a rare win-win scenario involving a superstar, even though Hill’s new team, the Dolphins, has yet to make a deep playoff run. There’s potential for that to change this year, as Miami’s offense, led by the up-and-coming head coach Mike McDaniel, is arguably one of the best in the league. Hill and Jaylen Waddle form a formidable wide receiver duo. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is having a highly successful fourth season and is even in the MVP conversation alongside Hill. When Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was asked about Hill’s recent messages to his former team, he reiterated that their side is prepared and eager to face Hill in a competitive battle.
There’s a strong possibility that this year could be the one for Miami. The Dolphins’ offense, under the guidance of the up-and-coming head coach Mike McDaniel, is arguably one of the best in the league. With the dynamic duo of Hill and Jaylen Waddle as wide receivers, and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa having a highly successful fourth season, there’s even MVP buzz surrounding both Hill and Tagovailoa. Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ tight end, commented on Hill’s recent messages to their former team, highlighting Hill’s playful and outspoken nature. Kelce said, “Tyreek is a funny guy, man. He’s a fun guy. He likes to say his piece. He’s always been like that, even just playing basketball in the locker room in Kansas City. And I’ve seen him lose a lot of those games, so I’ll leave it at that and know that he’s going to get a team that’s ready to fight and ready to go all four quarters. If it has to go into OT (overtime), then it has to go. I know we’re ready, we’re prepared, and it’s going to be a heck of a game for everybody watching here in Germany.”
Chris Jones, a defensive tackle and fellow member of the Chiefs’ 2016 NFL Draft class, has known Hill since they both entered the league. They developed together over their initial years with the team, contributing to the team’s championship win. While both players elevated their games in 2022, with Jones doing so as a part of another Super Bowl-winning team, Jones expressed his support for Hill’s competitive spirit. However, he emphasized the need to back up the talk on the field, saying, “Listen, man, we’ve still got a game to play. As much as I love Tyreek, sometimes we just talk a lot. We just talk, talk, talk. I understand, you know, he wants to rile this crowd up, and I support it. But at the end of the day, when the pads come on and those lights go on, we’ve still got to line up and play, right? Looking forward to it.”
Coach Reid, in a playful tone, also acknowledged his positive relationship with Hill but humorously mentioned that he’s not rooting for Hill on Sunday, saying, “I always got along good with Tyreek. Heck, I’m one of his biggest fans as long as we’re not in Germany playing him. He’s a good kid.”
