LB Frankie Luvu Eyeing Panthers Extension

Frankie Luvu has shown to be a valuable player on the Panthers’ defense and has shown a great deal of versatility. His current contract expires in 2023, but it doesn’t seem like a new one is in the works.

In order to stay in Carolina, the 27-year-old inked a two-year, $9MM contract in 2022. With Luvu’s increasing workload since then, that has proven to be a very wise investment for the Panthers. He was given a clear indication by the squad that he would have a varied function, and this has led to a notable increase in output.

In the upcoming months, the Panthers will need to resolve their issue with sack leader Brian Burns. This summer, the two-time Pro Bowler’s rookie contract is scheduled to expire, and this past week, Carolina once more turned down trade offers from other teams. The majority of Carolina’s available cash in 2024 will go toward a franchise tag or long-term deal; the team is presently expected to have mid-pack cap space that season. Although a rise is also necessary for a new contract with Luvu, he intends to stay on after 2023.

Person was told by Luvu, “You know the part about the business.” “I could be here, or I could be anywhere. However, I wish I could be here in Charlotte.

Charlotte…” I adore the surroundings. I adore the way of life. These coaches are great. But that’s the challenging aspect of the industry. I have no control over when or if I become a free agent and begin to exercise control. But for the time being, I’m just going to stay where I am, where my feet are.

With Justin Houston and Yetur Gross-Matos, two pass rushers, on injured reserve, Carolina may use Luvu more as an edge rusher than a middle linebacker in the latter stretch of the campaign. No matter how he is used, though, he will be well-positioned in free agency for a second Panthers re-up or a deal that sends him away if he maintains his productivity from the first seven games.

Last season, Luvu easily set a new career best in sacks with seven and crossed the 100-tackle mark for the first time in his career. With 51 stops and 3.5 sacks this season, the former Jets UDFA is having yet another successful campaign. Luvu has the greatest pass rush grade of any middle linebacker according to PFF, proving that he can cause havoc when positioned as an edge rusher. Therefore, he should receive a significant raise on his next contract; nevertheless, Luvu stated in an interview with Joe Person of The Athletic (subscription required) that no discussions about an extension had yet taken place.
