Jacob Murphy took a big risk returning from injury yesterday following his shoulder dislocation against Borussia Dortmund. When Jacob Murphy went off injured in the Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund, it looked like he was going to be missing for a while after it was clear he’d dislocated his shoulder in a bad landing. It was definitely a surprise, then, to see his name on the teamsheet yesterday, albeit on the bench. Clearly, Jacob Murphy was confident that he had recovered enough and he’d convinced the medical staff that he was fit enough to play too.
By now, everyone knows Eddie Howe will utilize Jacob Murphy if he’s on the bench, and that’s exactly what he did when he brought him on shortly after the hour to replace Miguel Almiron.
Murphy quickly got into the heart of things, blasting the ball across the goal’s face to set up Anthony Gordon’s winning goal.
Murphy was wrong.
Sadly, he was only able to play for ten more minutes or so before his shoulder dislocated once more while he was sprinting toward the goal. As he left the field once more, it was evident how much suffering he was in.
Despite this, he continued to be upbeat and posted an update on Instagram, saying:
“To go out there and battle with my squad tonight was a risk, but one I believed was worth taking! Three key points.
Anthony Gordon, the goal-scoring hero, answered right away with a poignant three-word message.
“What a guy”
What a guy indeed, Anthony. What a guy, indeed.
