Following their 1-1 draw with fellow Championship struggling team Rotherham, QPR manager Marti Cifuentes has encouraged Ilias Chair to be a remarkable player for his new team.
A few days prior to the west Londoners’ weekend trip to New York Stadium, the Spanish head coach was named as Gareth Ainsworth’s replacement.
Cifuentes, 41, joined QPR after leaving Swedish Premier League team Hammarby.
Ilias Chair gave the R’s the lead in the 50th minute, but Georgie Kelly’s first goal of the year for Rotherham tied the score 20 minutes later.
Chair’s first goal of the year and his first goal since the 3-1 loss at Middlesbrough in February came off the scoreboard.
“I’m having fun mentoring him,” Cifuentes said on the QPR YouTube channel. “Ilias is a unique player who will be crucial to our success.
“He was among the best men we had on the field today.”
The point ended Rangers’ run of six straight losses, although it kept them in the bottom three in the Championship.
Cifuentes stated, “We’re a little disappointed about the outcome.” However, I advised the lads that we should see the bright side of things because there were aspects of our performance that we could review later.
Things can improve. Mixed emotions prevail. As a club, we will always want to win, and we deserved the three points since we had the opportunities. The game was well within our control. Though difficult, we didn’t give up many opportunities for goals. We made a few that were obvious.
“All things considered, we played the game well. We examine the performance, and I’m happy to see that the back of the team was steady. However, I’m not happy with the outcome because we gave up from a set-piece.
