Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has hinted at the club’s willingness to contest a proposed rule change by Premier League rivals aimed at preventing the Magpies from loaning players from Saudi Arabia. The upcoming vote later this month is intended to bar Newcastle from signing players on loan from specific Saudi Pro League clubs.

The Magpies have been rumored to be eyeing a January move for former Wolves player Ruben Neves. This interest arises as Howe seeks to reinforce the midfield following Sandro Tonali’s 10-month ban for breaching betting rules.

Neves, who joined Saudi club Al-Hilal in the summer after six years at Molineux, is associated with four clubs owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, which also holds ownership of Newcastle. Some English teams are discontented with the possibility that Newcastle could utilize these Saudi clubs to secure players through an indirect approach. The chiefs of all Premier League sides are set to vote on November 21, considering a temporary ban to prevent teams from loaning players from clubs under the same ownership in the upcoming January transfer window.

Eddie Howe has hinted that Newcastle may contest the proposed rule changes by Premier League rivals seeking to prevent the Magpies from loaning players from Saudi Arabia. Al-Nassr, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Ahli, also owned by the PIF, boast players like Cristiano Ronaldo, N’Golo Kante, Sadio Mane, and Karim Benzema.

Addressing the reports for the first time at his press conference, Howe was asked if Newcastle would challenge the proposals, to which he replied, “You can make that assumption.” However, Howe refrained from delving into the potential impact of these changes and what they could mean for Newcastle, stating, “I will let you decide why those rules are coming in. That’s not for me to comment on. We will work within the rules the Premier League sets, and we have to respect those rules, whatever they are.”
