‘Huge blow’ Newcastle United star a ‘big doubt’ for two games after new injury concern

Despite suffering a hamstring injury in midweek, Newcastle United attacker Callum Wilson has been nominated to the England squad.Callum Wilson is an injury doubt for England’s forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, according to Gareth Southgate.

The 31-year-old started Newcastle United’s 2-0 Champions League loss to Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening but was replaced at halftime due to hamstring pain.

After the game, Magpies manager Eddie Howe said it was “too early to say” if Wilson would be available for this weekend’s long trip to his former side Bournemouth.

Despite this, Southgate nominated Wilson to his Three Lions squad yesterday but stated that his participation is currently questionable.

“You would be amazed how complicated it is picking a squad because all clubs are sensitive to information and you’re trying to piece everything together,” Southgate told the BBC.

“I can’t guarantee that everyone on that squad will be there on Sunday night.”

“There are many levels of skepticism. Callum is obviously the greatest concern, but I’m quite convinced the others can make it, and they’re all eager to be in the squad, which is a really good sign.”

If Wilson is ruled out of the Magpies’ trip to the South Coast on Saturday, Anthony Gordon will likely move from the left wing to the center striker position, as he did in last week’s 3-0 Carabao Cup success against Manchester United.

Southgate ignored Gordon, one of the Premier League’s most in-form wingers, as well as goalkeeper Nick Pope. Kieran Trippier, on the other hand, kept his place.

“That is an area of the pitch where we have probably got as much competition for places as anywhere,” Southgate said in a statement.

“Look at Jarrod Bowen, he’s already got seven goals this season.” Anthony Gordon is having a fantastic season at Newcastle. Cole Palmer is making strides. It’s basically a shifting landscape.”

Next Friday, England will host Malta at Wembley before traveling to North Macedonia four days later. Southgate’s team has already qualified for the Euros next summer.
