Carlos Corberan name the key reason why West Brom loss to Southampton

Carlos Corberan emphasizes the importance of accuracy following West Brom’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton. Despite a strong performance, Corberan acknowledges that mere positive play isn’t enough for satisfaction. The match saw Adam Armstrong securing a late winner for the hosts, overshadowing Albion’s dominance in the second half.

Corberan highlights the discrepancy in both penalty boxes as a decisive factor, with Will Smallbone opening the scoring for Southampton in the fifth minute. Albion displayed resilience, with Brandon Thomas-Asante missing a crucial chance before a competitive first half concluded.

The second period was largely dominated by Albion, evident in chances by Thomas-Asante and Matt Phillips. Kyle Bartley equalized after Thomas-Asante’s header hit the bar. Darnell Furlong’s header hit the crossbar, and Armstrong’s late winner proved heartbreaking despite a save by Gavin Bazunu.

While many considered it a satisfying display in defeat, Corberan remains dissatisfied due to the unfavorable result. He emphasizes the need to improve attacking and defensive capabilities in both boxes, acknowledging that Southampton’s accuracy in front of goal played a crucial role in the final outcome.

Corberan points out a moment in the game where Armstrong capitalized on defensive positioning, highlighting the need for vigilance in Albion’s six-yard box. Despite the competitiveness and standard of the clash, he acknowledges Southampton’s superiority in the crucial last third of the pitch.

Regarding complaints about the performance, Corberan notes that the primary concern is the absence of a victory. He stresses the ongoing need for growth in both attacking and defensive aspects. Nathaniel Chalobah’s absence in the second half is confirmed as unrelated to injury, as Alex Mowatt replaced him in what Corberan considers an overall excellent performance by Albion’s players.
