Tonali will not return to first-team action until August 2024, thus Newcastle are eager for a replacement in the January transfer window.Fabrizio Romano recently stated on his podcast that the idea is for Phillips to depart Manchester City in the upcoming transfer window, with Newcastle appearing to be the frontrunners.
Eddie Howe could use as many experienced bodies as possible with the Magpies’ present injury issue.
Phillips very close to leaving Man City
The £45m signing appears to be on his way out of Pep Guardiola’s team following only one start this season, which came against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.
His move to the Citizens in 2022 simply did not work out, and the 27-year-old is now eager to find another club where he can play regularly in the first team.
Despite Juventus’ interest, Romano suggested in his most recent Q&A podcast that Newcastle are leading the hunt for Phillips’ signature.
“Is Kalvin Phillips on his way out of Manchester City in January?” Yes, this is absolutely the plan. Nothing is changing right now. Kalvin Phillips aspires to be a regular football player.
“We’ve heard a lot about Juventus because the director was in England, but they’re looking for a more offensive player.”
“I’d keep a close eye on the Premier League market.” Newcastle, for example, has to replace Sandro Tonali, and Phillips is one of the choices.”
A loan deal may be the best option for both City and Newcastle as Howe wants to bring Phillips in as a temporary replacement until Tonali returns.
Phillips could be the answer for Howe
Even with the signing of Tonali in the summer, Newcastle’s midfield has been unbalanced at times, something Phillips might help to correct.
Because neither Bruno Guimaraes nor Tonali perform the usual defensive midfielder role, someone is constrained. Phillips would offer Bruno the leeway to be more creative, maybe unlocking more of his genius.
Phillips hasn’t been able to demonstrate it at City, but he’s exactly the type of player Howe would like to add to his squad. The midfielder never seemed to weary at Leeds and pushed his way into the England team due to his work ethic and defensive ability.
