If Marti Cifuentes, the new manager of QPR, wants to succeed, he should make use of Chris Willock.
On October 30, Marti Cifuentes was named QPR’s first-team manager after Gareth Ainsworth was fired.
With only two victories from their first fourteen games, QPR’s campaign has been somewhat concerning thus far. As a result, they currently sit inside the relegation zone.
While Gareth Ainsworth enjoyed success throughout his playing career with the Hoops, the same cannot be said of his coaching tenure.
After leaving QPR in a problematic situation, the former Wycombe manager has given Marti Cifuentes the task of turning things around for the team.
If nothing changes, the Hoops, who are now six points outside of safety, could find themselves playing in the third division of English football for the first time in 20 years.
An out-of-favor player at QPR could be the secret to Cifuentes’ success in his first English football role if he uses him wisely.
How has this season gone for Chris Willock?
It has been far from certain that Willock will start in the starting eleven since Ainsworth’s appointment in February. Initially, it was attributed to a hamstring strain, but as the 25-year-old stayed out of commission, it seemed Ainsworth was favoring others over Willock.
Despite being fit, Willock has not played the entire ninety minutes this season. Of QPR’s first 14 games, he has only started three and made six substitute appearances. Even though they are aware of his value, the Hoops’ fan base has become irate over his lack of playing time.
Willock hasn’t contributed a goal to the team this season, but he hasn’t had a significant amount of playing time, which may be hurting his confidence. Willock was substituted on after one hour in a 3-1 loss to Coventry during his final start in September.
Marti Cifuentes, the new manager, needs to see past this and acknowledge his exceptional abilities, which have occasionally been on par with Premier League standards.
What value can Chris Willock add to this underperforming QPR team?
Except for his time spent with Gareth Ainsworth, Willock has contributed significantly to the West London team.
If granted playing time, Willock might be just what QPR has been waiting for this season, with his dangerous inventiveness and eye for goal.
Given that Willock, 25, has a history of producing standout performances, allowing him to return to the starting lineup would probably be well-received by the QPR supporters. With seven goals and eleven assists from 35 Championship appearances, the dynamic attacker’s 2021–2022 campaign stands out as his best by a wide margin.
He went on a perfect six-game streak during that period He was credited with eight goals. He was credited with eight goals.
Cifuentes will have a winner if he can persuade Chris Willock to perform at this level.
All Willock needs is a string of games in what is maybe his greatest position—the number 10 spot—and he will almost certainly provide it.
