Fabrizio Romano reveals Newcastle’s January transfer plan – Hints at top target and plan B

Newcastle manager Fabrizio Romano has disclosed that the club is waiting to see if they will be in the Champions League, Europa League, or out of European competition altogether in January before finalizing their transfer plans.

He believes the club will go ahead with a move for Ruben Neves if the Premier League vote on related-party transactions next week approves it, and he claims club officials, Eddie Howe, and the player himself are all eager for the deal to materialize.

However, he has heard that Newcastle are ‘not enthusiastic’ about the November 21st meeting going in our favor, which means Kalvin Phillips could be targeted, despite no negotiations taking place between Newcastle and Man City so far.

Here’s what the Italian had to say to Caughtoffside on Monday night on the forthcoming vote, Neves, Phillips, and Newcastle’s patient posture on prospective January transfers:

“This meeting will be critical.” It is necessary to understand the difficulties for Newcastle and other co-ownership scenarios. To avoid complications, they must clarify.

“From what I’ve heard, Newcastle is not optimistic.” Newcastle believes that many clubs will try to stymie this type of migration. So the Ruben Neves deal is in jeopardy right now, and they realize it will be extremely difficult to complete. We’ll know more on the 21st (the date of the Premier League vote).

“For certain, Newcastle’s plan is to sign a new midfielder to replace Sandro Tonali, who will be out for the rest of the season.” They are investigating the midfielder market. However, it is critical for them to first determine if they will compete in the Champions League, the Europa League, or both.

“So they’re waiting for clarity on European competitions before deciding how much to spend on another midfielder and what type of player they want.” For example, Kalvin Phillips may be another option, but there is no agreement as of today because Newcastle is still deciding who they would seek.

“Ruben Neves is a player they like and a player Eddie Howe respects.” If they have the option, I’m sure they’d like to move forward with the Ruben Neves transaction. He is the ideal player for them; he also has the necessary experience, and they adore him. But, once again, the ruling on the 21st will make everything clear.

“Newcastle is watching. They are aware that Neves would be interested in the move and a return to the Premier League and European action. So he and Newcastle are both waiting.”
