Newcastle United’s 3-0 loss against Bournemouth on Saturday was depressing.
The Cherries won 2-0 despite what was perhaps one of the worst displays of the Eddie Howe era at Newcastle.
Because of the disappointment, Kieran Trippier got into a furious argument with a supporter after the game.
Newcastle were terrible on the south coast, as Alan Shearer pointed out after the final whistle.
Of course, the sheer amount of injuries sustained by the squad in recent weeks complicates matters, and context must be considered, but there was little doubt that Howe’s team was inept.
After the game, Amanda Staveley appears to have left a note for the locker room.
Newcastle news: What Amanda Staveley said to dressing room about Bournemouth defeat
According to The Athletic, Staveley, who has made no secret of her ambition to see Newcastle win big trophies soon, told the players she was proud of their efforts and expressed regret that she could not assist them more.
Newcastle: This team have bounced back before
Consider the defeat to Brighton in September and the hasty (and quickly disputed) allegations. Howe was under fire following three straight losses.
Consider how successfully the squad recovered from that. They have demonstrated that they are not a group that will wallow in their own disappointment.
The dressing room was said to have thought the reaction to the reversal was exaggerated at the time.
If Newcastle comes back from the international break with a strong performance against Chelsea – which will not be easy – they may look back on Saturday’s encounter in a similar light.
It would be foolish to suggest poor performances shouldn’t be addressed just because things have been so good since the takeover but this team deserves trust.
