The Green Bay Packers are now 3-6 and out of contention for the playoffs in 2023. The loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers could have been the final nail in the coffin for a probable postseason run. While there were some advantages to be found in their loss, there were also enough negatives to warrant a release. That is precisely what the Packers accomplished less than 24 hours after their defeat.
The Green Bay Packers Release Defensive Back Innis Gaines Less Than 24 Hours After Loss To The Pittsburgh Steelers
The Green Bay Packers have announced the release of S Innis Gaines. On Monday, General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction.
Gaines first joined the Packers on January 8, 2021, and has spent time on both the practice squad and the main roster. He has participated in 12 games for the Packers, making one start. This season, he has made four appearances. Gaines has four solo defensive tackles and seven special teams tackles for the Packers.
Gaines’ release looks to have been done to make place for a new defensive back. According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Packers have claimed Seahawks’ Kyu Blu Kelly off waivers.
Kelly was selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He was taken off waivers by the Seahawks after final cuts in August and spent the first two months or so on their roster, playing 38 special teams snaps.
