The firing of Ken Dorsey did not come as a surprise to Buffalo Bills fans.
Unexpectedly, Josh Allen holds himself accountable for the firing of his former offensive coordinator.
He expressed his view that Dorsey would still be on staff if Allen had performed better, saying, “Without a doubt, and I take that very personally,” via NewYorkUpstate.com. “It hurts a lot to see someone you care about go through a situation like that and to know that if I could have done more, if this offense could have done more, we wouldn’t have had to do something like that.”
Except for the odd explosive outburst (like as a 48-20 victory over Miami in Week 4), Allen and the Bills haven’t performed up to expectations in the majority of games. Despite leading the NFL in interceptions (11) and giveaways (14), Allen has found it difficult to regain his quarterbacking magic. The Bills have lost games due to his carelessness with the ball in the past. In their most recent game, a 24-22 loss to Denver on Monday night, Allen was responsible for three turnovers.
Allen has far too frequently arrived at a postgame platform with a frustrated and defeated expression. He’s often been at a loss when asked what went wrong.
After having some time to think about it on Wednesday, Allen acknowledged that he was aware of the issue. And it’s hardly shocking, much like the firing of Dorsey.
“Turnover-wise it’s abysmal when we lose and there’s no secret to that,” Allen stated. “Our offense and team are not malfunctioning. However, there are significant differences between our wins and losses (with turnovers). Once more, that is my responsibility. We must both improve; I must also improve.”
Even in 2023, Allen had his moments of brilliance. In Weeks Two, Three, and Four, he and the Bills destroyed the Miami Dolphins, Washington Commanders, and Las Vegas Raiders. Since then, though, Buffalo has found it difficult to reclaim its offensive intensity. Additionally, they have been playing mediocre defense as a result of losing two crucial defenders, Tre’Davious White and Matt Milano.
While the decision to fire Dorsey may have seemed like a reasonable move, there’s no guarantee that it will address all of the team’s issues. The critical factor appears to be the performance of Allen. The Buffalo Bills’ success is closely tied to his effectiveness, and when he is playing well and protecting the football, the team’s chances of winning significantly improve. However, recent performances have raised concerns in this regard.
Despite Allen’s recent struggles, his teammates continue to express confidence in him. Being the cover athlete for the latest Madden NFL title suggests a level of accomplishment, and his fellow Bills believe he will rediscover his form.
Linebacker Von Miller stated, “I wouldn’t trade Josh for anybody else in the league, past or future. Any of the greats that ever played the game, I wouldn’t trade Josh for any of those guys. His ceiling is something I have never [seen].”
With a current record of 5-5, the Bills face the urgency of resolving their issues promptly before it adversely impacts their season. The team is counting on Allen to rectify his mistakes and return to a positive trajectory swiftly.
