A former Atlanta Braves coach, Ron Washington, is set to embark on a new chapter in Los Angeles as he takes on the managerial role for the Los Angeles Angels, succeeding Phil Nevin. This marks Washington’s first managerial position since 2014, following his successful stint leading the Texas Rangers to two World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011.
After coaching the Oakland Athletics from 2015-16, Washington began his coaching story with the Braves in 2017, where he encountered a promising young player named Ozzie Albies. Albies, who made his MLB debut that year, displayed a .810 OPS in 57 games, catching Washington’s attention. The coach took Albies under his wing, nurturing his potential.
Upon learning of Washington’s new opportunity in LA, Albies expressed his gratitude on Instagram, crediting Washington for shaping him into the player he is today. Albies, now known for his 33-homer power, speed, good defense, and ability to score and drive in runs, thanked Washington for unwavering support.
Their collaboration resulted in a World Series win in 2021, and Washington’s coaching played a pivotal role in Albies securing a long-term contract, providing stability for his family. Despite the temporary goodbye, both Washington, now managing an MLB team at 71, and Albies, a star player on a dynamic team, are deemed winners in life and true friends.
