Falcons now interested in signing experienced top players following there underperformance in 10 games

The Atlanta Falcons have had a disappointing performance in the initial 10 games of the season, currently holding a 4-6 record despite starting 2-0 for the first time since 2017. Despite substantial spending in the offseason, they’ve lost six of their last eight games, prompting speculation about what they lack. While quarterback concerns dominate discussions, the need for a skilled edge rusher is also a significant priority. With a projected $50.7 million in cap space for the upcoming offseason, the potential contract situation of Carolina Panthers’ edge rusher Brian Burns is worth monitoring.

In a recent article assessing the upcoming free agency class, ESPN notes Burns’ impressive five sacks this season (following 12.5 in 2022) and a pass rush win rate of 27.3%, which would rank third in the NFL if qualified. Burns, 25, possesses top-tier edge rushing traits and is entering his prime playing years. Despite being a defensive star for the Panthers, he has yet to sign a long-term extension. Since his selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Burns has rapidly become one of the league’s premier young edge rushers, amassing 42 sacks in 70 games.

Last season, Burns generated 68 total pressures, ranking ninth among edge rushers per Pro Football Focus, and converted them into 10 sacks. In the current season, he has recorded 10 hurries and six sacks in eight games. If Burns reaches free agency, the Falcons, armed with over $50 million in projected cap space, could pursue him as an ideal addition to their roster.
