The Houston Texans recently released cornerback Jason Verrett from their practice squad after a brief and uneventful stint. Despite the initial signing on October 11, Verrett did not see any playing time during his time with the Texans, remaining on the practice squad for over a month. The Texans announced the release on November 15, and no corresponding addition was made.
Verrett, who previously played four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, is now in search of a new team. His time with the 49ers was marked by impressive performances when he was on the field, despite being hampered by injuries. However, at 32 years old, time is of the essence for Verrett. With San Francisco’s secondary showing improvement in a recent 34-3 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, a return to the 49ers seems unlikely for his next opportunity.
Jason Verrett’s NFL Journey
Selected as a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Jason Verrett carried high expectations with the San Diego Chargers. Unfortunately, his promising start was marred by early injury issues, limiting him to just six games in his rookie season. Despite the limited playing time, his performance, including four passes defended and an interception, showcased his potential.
The following season validated his talent as he recorded three interceptions and 12 pass breakups in 14 games. However, the subsequent four years were marked by significant setbacks, with Verrett playing only six games due to three major injuries – an ACL tear, a torn Achilles, and an ankle issue during his initial 49ers season, sidelining him during what should have been his prime years.
Despite the setbacks, the San Francisco 49ers remained committed to Verrett, bringing him back in 2020. This decision proved beneficial as he played in 13 games, contributing with two interceptions and seven passes defended. Unfortunately, in 2022, another torn Achilles, combined with starting the season on injured reserve, signaled the end of his tenure with the 49ers.
