Newcastle forward faces ‘big decision’ as interest emerges after latest surprise snub

Due to Gordon’s excellent play for the Magpies, head coach Eddie Howe recently stated that he was “sure” the 22-year-old would be on Gareth Southgate’s radar.

Despite his stellar performances for Newcastle, Gordon was once again left out of the England squad for this week’s meeting and the matches against North Macedonia and Malta. This was the second time that Gordon had been disregarded, as Southgate had to make some substitutions due to withdrawals, one of which was Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.

Although Gordon was born in Merseyside, his paternal grandparents allowed him to be eligible to play for Scotland. Along the route to helping the Young Lions win the European Championships last year, he played 16 times for the Under-21 team and represented England across all age levels. He was also named Player of the Tournament.

Gordon is still awaiting his first call-up to the senior squad for England, despite making an impression for the Under-21s and having a fantastic start to the season with Newcastle.

His rejections have caught the attention of Scotland manager Steve Clarke and assistant John Carver, who have already attempted to sign Newcastle strikers Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes this season and are also considering the eligibility of Tino Livramento.

“If someone has a relation who is Scottish, then we have to look at it,” former Newcastle coach Carver stated in an interview with the Daily Record. The final decision will be made by him, but we are conscious that these are significant choices that will affect their future.

“I watch Newcastle more than anyone else, and that’s no secret. We know that they have a number of exceptional players who are eligible for Scotland but have never received a senior England cap.

Among Newcastle’s best players this season, Gordon has four goals in his 11 Premier League games.

Howe, his supervisor, is positive that the England call will come—it’s just a question of when.

“I’m sure Gareth is aware of him and I’m sure he’s been aware of him for a long time,” he recently stated.

Anthony is limited to maintaining his current level of performance and mental toughness. Working with him has been a pleasure, and he is benefiting from it.

He is incredibly talented, has a lot to offer, and also has the right mindset. It is wonderful to see him rewarded for his effort to get better—I witness it every day in training.
