Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says he would play for Sunderland on one hilarious condition

Alan Shearer, Newcastle United’s all-time greatest striker, has admitted that if he could relive his playing career, he would join Sunderland – but only to see the Black Cats relegated. Newcastle United’s renowned scorer scored six goals in 11 games versus Sunderland in black and white colors.

His final football kick came against an already-relegated Mackem team in April 2006, when he scored the third goal in a 4-1 thrashing at the Stadium of Light. That was a Tyne-Wear derby high for Shearer, who had some of his lowest ebbs in his career when Newcastle met Sunderland. Ruud Gullit’s tenure as manager of St James’ Park came to an end in August 1999, when Shearer was placed on the bench for a 2-1 home defeat. His terrible luck continued a year later, when the Magpies were defeated for the second year in a straight despite leading 1-0 at halftime.

Sunderland’s relegation to the lower leagues has put a halt to the rivalry, but Shearer believes it is still alive. The Newcastle veteran was asked which English team he would play for if given the chance again.

“Sunderland for me, because I would have got them ******* relegated again!” Shearer told co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on The Rest Is Football podcast, which elicited chuckles.

Lineker then disclosed that he had turned down the opportunity to join Manchester United, prompting a caustic retort from Shearer. “You turned Sir Alex down?” he replied. You’re a ******* moron. What kind of moron does that?”
