Ryan Tannehill went viral on Friday after a rumor circulated that he had requested his release from the Tennessee Titans. Ryan Tannehill, did you really ask to be released by the Tennessee Titans? The veteran quarterback has now cleared the air. For those who missed it, Tannehill’s name began to circulate online when an unsubstantiated report surfaced claiming that he had requested to be released by the Titans. It was posted by an X account (previously Twitter) impersonating an ESPN reporter named Jeff Simon. The account was later suspended, but not before the rumor gained traction and became global.
Many people believed the rumor because it is not at all impossible. It’s natural for Tannehill to want to go after losing his starting role to rookie Will Levis due to an ankle injury. Not to mention that, with the trade deadline having passed, Tannehill’s sole alternative is to request a release and find a team in need of a starting quarterback.
Of course, it assumes Tannehill is truly dissatisfied with his current situation with the Titans. However, the rumor turned out to be false, and even Tannehill was taken aback by the claim. When speaking to reporters on Friday, he admitted as much.
“I, too, was caught off surprise by those reports. “Obviously, I want to play, but I’m not sure what that looks like at this point,” Tannehill told Paul Kuharsky. When asked if there had been any negotiations about his possible release, he responded, “No, there’s been no talks with (head coach Mike) Vrabel or anything like that.”
Since taking over for the injured Ryan Tannehill in Week 8, Will Levis has been the Titans’ starting quarterback. Following his performance against the Atlanta Falcons, the team chose to stick with him for the rest of the season.
Tannehill’s future with the team was certainly jeopardized as a result of the move. He is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent at the end of the 2023 season. It remains to be seen what Tannehill intends to do in the future, but for the time being, he remains dedicated to the Tennessee team as they attempt to climb the standings.
