Paris Saint-Germain is facing a significant setback ahead of their upcoming Champions League clash against Newcastle United as 17-year-old sensation Warren Zaire-Emery is set to miss the match due to an ankle injury sustained during his debut for France. Zaire-Emery contributed to Les Bleues’ 14-0 victory at the Allianz Riviera, scoring the third goal by tapping in Kingsley Coman’s low cross in the 16th minute. Unfortunately, he suffered a heavy blow to his ankle during the goal celebration, requiring treatment before being substituted.
The subsequent medical assessment revealed that Zaire-Emery has a sprained ankle, and as a result, he is expected to be sidelined for “several weeks,” according to France manager Didier Deschamps. This injury comes as a significant blow for Paris Saint-Germain, depriving them of the young talent’s services in a crucial Champions League encounter.
Following the game, Didier Deschamps provided an update on Warren Zaire-Emery’s injury, stating, “From the information I have, the examination is reassuring; there is no fracture, but there is a good big sprain.” Deschamps expressed relief that the initial concerns about a more serious injury were alleviated. He emphasized the importance of Zaire-Emery remembering his first selection for his first goal rather than for negative reasons, even though the experience ended sooner than expected.
Less than 24 hours later, Deschamps offered a more specific timescale for Zaire-Emery’s recovery, stating on the French television show Telefoot, “It’s still a significant injury that will certainly take several weeks [to heal].” He acknowledged the unfortunate nature of losing players in matches like this and expressed gratitude that the injury was not more severe.
Zaire-Emery has since returned to Paris Saint-Germain for further treatment, and Deschamps expressed hope that the young talent’s recovery period won’t be too lengthy.
