Charlton Athletic’s head coach, Michael Appleton, has clarified the decision to refrain from recalling Daniel Kanu from his loan spell at Southend United. Although the 19-year-old striker initially joined Southend on a 28-day deal in October and is now eligible for recall, Charlton has chosen to retain him at Roots Hall, even with an injury to Chuks Aneke.
Kanu, who recently earned his first senior call-up for Sierra Leone, played as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat to Egypt in a World Cup qualifier. Appleton emphasized the importance of providing Kanu with extensive playing time to aid his development, considering him a natural goalscorer. Despite areas in his game that require improvement, particularly in link-up play, Appleton believes that these aspects will progress with increased minutes on the field.
The decision aligns with the goal of fostering Kanu’s growth by allowing him to continue gaining experience at Southend. Appleton acknowledged ongoing discussions about new professional terms for Kanu within the club, emphasizing their commitment to viewing him as a valuable asset to Charlton Athletic.
