In five appearances this season, Aidan O’Connell has thrown for 946 yards, tallying three touchdowns and six interceptions. While his potential as the Las Vegas Raiders’ long-term starting quarterback remains uncertain, the team is reportedly eyeing prospects from the 2024 NFL Draft class. CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards suggests that LSU’s rising star, Jayden Daniels, could be a fitting choice for the Raiders.
Given the struggles with Jimmy Garoppolo and O’Connell, a strategic move in the draft seems likely for the franchise. Projected to pick in the middle of the first round, the Raiders have an opportunity to acquire a promising player, especially considering Daniels’ stellar senior season. The team’s preference for a particular quarterback type is unclear, pending a full-time head coaching hire.
Daniels is currently experiencing a breakout season, showcasing remarkable stats with 36 touchdowns and four interceptions, along with 1,014 rushing yards and 10 ground touchdowns. His dual-threat capabilities make him an appealing prospect, potentially within reach for the Raiders, especially if they don’t secure a top-10 draft pick.
A notable factor in Daniels’ favor is his connection with interim head coach Antonio Pierce, who coached at Arizona State when Daniels was there from 2019 to 2021. Pierce’s familiarity with Daniels both on and off the field provides unique insight, potentially influencing the Raiders’ draft decisions.
As for O’Connell’s chances of being the franchise quarterback, while not completely ruled out, he faces challenges. At 25, he is considered older for a rookie, and concerns about limited athleticism and ball security pose obstacles. Although O’Connell has shown glimpses of potential, he must significantly impress the team in the upcoming weeks to deter them from seeking a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.
