Robinson baffled by ‘Strange’ West Brom decision in new Corberan message

Paul Robinson has commended Carlos Corberan’s efforts this season, praising the manager’s work despite what Robinson considers as “strange” decisions made by West Brom. Despite facing a depleted squad due to a quiet summer transfer window, West Brom currently holds the seventh position in the Championship, sharing points with Sunderland in the final top six spot.

Robinson acknowledged Corberan’s excellent work at The Hawthorns, attributing much of the team’s success to the manager. However, the former left-back expressed confusion over West Brom’s choice to let go of players like Taylor Gardner-Hickman and other squad members during the summer transfer window. In a statement quoted by the Express & Star on November 21, Robinson said, “I think at this moment in time he’s done a great job, especially with the limited funds he’s had to work with. The squad is down to the bare bones, he’s had to let players go – good players in my eyes, like Taylor Gardner-Hickman, good footballers who you’d keep as squad players, I found that strange. But seventh in the league…in a tough, tough league this year, the teams that came down, those that come up, it’s one of the toughest in a long time. I think Carlos is doing a good job.” As a result, Guimaraes has piqued the curiosity of several clubs. “This year West Brom are in a great position but you might be concerned with that depth just to take them that little bit further where they need to be,” said one manager. But I’d want to see it since Baggies have always belonged in the top flight due to the work they’ve done there in the past.”om Liverpool, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain, while revealing last year that he had ‘a conversation’ with Real Madrid.

Great position

The prevailing sense of pessimism around The Hawthorns before the start of this season, coupled with a lackluster transfer window, had West Brom supporters bracing for a disappointing campaign. The absence of significant investment left manager Corberan with a severely limited squad, and key departures such as Gardner-Hickman, Karlan Grant, and Dara O’Shea further depleted the team’s depth. Despite these challenges, Corberan has orchestrated a commendable turnaround, securing victories even with key players sidelined due to injuries.

The Championship is always a formidable league to navigate, and this season poses additional challenges with several financially well-equipped teams in the mix. Achieving promotion to the Premier League will be a demanding task for West Brom, but their impressive start to the season, as recognized by Robinson and others, suggests the team has the potential to contend for playoff positions if they maintain their current level of performance.
