Gabby Agbonlahor now backs Newcastle to make shock move for £30m Arsenal player in January

Gabriel Agbonlahor has expressed support for the idea of Newcastle United making a surprising move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale during the January transfer window. Speaking on talkSPORT, the pundit outlined his belief that Newcastle may need to find a replacement for Nick Pope in the near future. Ramsdale has faced challenges this season at Arsenal, having lost his starting position to David Raya under manager Mikel Arteta.

The 26-year-old has not featured in the Premier League since the 3-1 victory over Manchester United in early September. Despite being a crucial figure at the Emirates Stadium last season and playing a significant role in Arsenal’s title push, Ramsdale has seen reduced playing time with Raya currently the preferred choice.

This situation has sparked speculation that Ramsdale could seek a move next summer. Agbonlahor has hinted that Newcastle might be interested in acquiring the goalkeeper, adding an element of unpredictability to the transfer landscape

Agbonlahor back Newcastle to move for Ramsdale

Agbonlahor suggested on talkSPORT that Newcastle will have to consider replacing Pope in the future owing to his talent with the ball at his feet. “He [Ramsdale] has to go in January, Arteta has made it clear,” the former Aston Villa striker added. “I’m going with Newcastle – Newcastle or Chelsea.”

“Pope is a great shot-blocker, but he can’t play with his feet.” How long will Newcastle continue to play like this?”

“Every Premier League team near the top has a keeper who can play from the back, and Pope cannot,” he continued.

“That’s the reason he’s maybe going to miss out on going to the Euros with England.”

Pope has been outstanding for the Magpies since joining them from Burnley last summer. Along with Ramsdale, the 31-year-old was one of the league’s finest goalkeepers last season.

While Agbonlahor is correct that Pope is uneasy with the ball at his feet, it would be surprising to see Newcastle sell him anytime soon.

After the suspension of Sandro Tonali, Eddie Howe will prioritize the signing of a new midfielder in the January transfer window.

Ramsdale is unquestionably a top goalkeeper, and the £30 million man would provide Newcastle with a unique alternative between the sticks.

However, the Magpies will have other priorities as the winter transfer window approaches, and it appears superfluous to replace Pope at this time.
