Illan Meslier has explained the reasons behind his decision not to leave Leeds United during the summer, contrary to expectations. The French goalkeeper revealed to Leeds Live on November 22 that he considered the option of departing after the team’s relegation but ultimately chose to stay in Yorkshire, crediting the arrival of manager Daniel Farke as a contributing factor.
Meslier emphasized that he didn’t want to act selfishly and considered the reorganization of the club and the new manager as positive elements influencing his decision. As a goalkeeper, he expressed the desire to play as much as possible and believed leaving and potentially being on the bench elsewhere was not in his best interest.
While Meslier is committed to trying everything to help the club secure promotion back to the Premier League in the current season, he acknowledged the uncertainty of the future. He hinted that a departure at the end of the season could still be on the table if the push for promotion proves unsuccessful, stating, “you never know what can happen.” Despite contemplating leaving in the summer, Meslier prioritized the team’s needs over personal considerations and chose to remain with Leeds United.
