Ian Wright expressed alarm after several Premier League teams voted against a temporary prohibition on related-party loans, and he questioned Wolves.
On Tuesday, top-tier teams were asked to vote on whether to temporarily restrict related-party loans, with 14 votes required for the ban to pass.
In the end, only 13 teams voted in favor of the ban, with seven clubs voting against it.
As a result, teams may freely pursue players from clubs owned by linked parties in January. Newcastle United, for example, will be able to sign players from any of PIF’s four Saudi Pro League clubs.
There has been much speculation regarding the Magpies loaning away former captain Ruben Neves.
Ian Wright baffled by Wolves vote on related-party loans
The latest Stick To Football episode on The Overlap YouTube channel discussed the referendum on related-party loans.
David Ornstein stated that he had the impression that the Wolves were going to support the ban at first. However, Wolves, somewhat surprisingly, voted against the temporary suspension. Wright couldn’t understand why Wolves voted the way they did, asking, “Why have Wolves voted against it?”
Gary Neville then questioned Wright if he was ‘worried’ about what’s going on at the top of football right now. “Yeah,” Wright replied. You’re worried about how the game is going since it’s all about greed. It appears to have gotten worse. Everyone is only concerned with themselves. “It was the ESL (European Super League) that shook me up.” Why do you mention Wolves, which have no evident (association)? I’m trying to make sense of it because it just feels corrupt to me. It has a really corrupt feel about it.”
Wolves vote is a little strange
It came as a surprise to see Wolves vote against the temporary suspension.
On the surface, Wolves don’t seem to have had much of a reason to vote no. There is a connection/association with Grasshoppers, as the Swiss outfit is owned by the wife of Fosun chairman Guo Guangchang.
Wolves, on the other hand, are unlikely to pursue players from the club in January.
One has to question whether Wolves don’t want to put themselves in jeopardy in the future, with Fosun maybe trying to acquire another club.
