AC Milan veteran and former technical director Paolo Maldini said this week that he attempted to sign Lionel Messi in 2021.
‘We tried for 10 days to get Messi to Milan, but we recognized it was impossible,’ Maldini stated last week.
‘It’s too late now, but a player like Messi is a sight to behold for anyone,’ Maldini continued. ‘I was worried when I read that he might potentially go to Inter!’
Messi’s services were on the market twice during his career, with Maldini able to sign him in 2021.
Messi made an emotional goodbye from the Nou Camp two summers ago when he chose to join French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain.

After spending the previous 21 years with Barcelona, the Argentine icon only stayed with PSG for two seasons.
Meanwhile, Milan failed in their attempt to get him to Serie A this summer when he signed with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami in July, while Saudi Arabian teams and Barcelona also wanted to sign him.
The Inter Miami player was courted by the Saudi league and was generally anticipated to join former rival Cristiano Ronaldo there this season before deciding to join David Beckham’s Major League Soccer team.
On a two-year contract with a third-season option, the World Cup winner earns between $50 and $60 million in Miami.
His contract is partially funded by adidas and Apple, with Messi receiving a cut of shirt sales and Apple television subscriptions to watch MLS.
Messi joined Miami and helped the club win the Leagues Cup, the franchise’s first championship.
After a poor start to the season, Messi and his squad were unable to make the MLS playoffs.
Maldini was fired in June after AC Milan advanced to the UEFA Champions League semifinals.
AC Milan is third in Serie A after 12 games this season, eight points behind leaders and crosstown rivals Inter Milan.
