Former Birmingham City player Jermaine Pennant has spoken out about the club’s decision to hire Wayne Rooney and what it could imply for the rest of the season. The former England captain took over at St Andrew’s last month, after Eustace was fired just days before. Rooney’s stint has not gone as planned, with the squad picking up only one point in his first five games.
Blues have dropped from contending for the play-offs to 18th position in the table as a result of the results. They return to action on Saturday against bottom-of-the-table Sheffield Wednesday at St Andrew’s, with Rooney searching for his first win as manager. Pennant didn’t mince words when asked about Rooney’s appointment at his former club. According to the former midfielder, the manager was only appointed because of his name in the game. “It’s sad to see what’s happening in Birmingham,” he said, according to King Casino Bonus. “At home, John Eustace will be sitting there with a cigar and a cup of tea.”
“Birmingham was sixth, but they’re now 18th and eight points from relegation.” That is a disaster and a huge blunder.”Given what they did last season, there was no reason to look at Wayne Rooney or any other manager. I realize it’s early, but it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.
“Wayne Rooney did not earn the right to be given this job, but I believe the American owners saw him as a marquee name.”
“They must understand that it does not work like that.” It’s English football, not American football or basketball, and you need a manager that knows how to win games.”
Pennant also predicted how the Blues would fare the rest of the season. “We need to ask ourselves how much time we give Rooney and his staff,” he continued.
“Based on what I’m seeing, I’m not very confident.” I’m not sure if things will improve.
“It’s not like they can spend £100 million on players.” I’m not sure what they can do to help turn things around in six months. I believe Birmingham will finish in the bottom half, and they won’t be far from where they are today – fighting for relegation.”
