Just In: Jamie Carragher doubles down on Newcastle United and Sandro Tonali ‘due diligence’ criticism

Following speculations that Newcastle United are interested in Sandro Tonali, the former Liverpool defender has spoken out. Newcastle United should not be rewarded for neglecting to investigate Sandro Tonali’s past, according to Jamie Carragher. The former Liverpool defender slammed the Magpies’ transfer policy on The Overlap earlier this week.

Earlier this week, Premier League clubs ruled against a temporary restriction on loan transactions between clubs owned by the same corporation. The vote may have occurred in response to news that Newcastle may sign Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal in January, with both teams owned by the Public Investment Fund.

Carragher suggested that the Magpies should not be permitted to make an easy fix this winter, citing Tonali’s 10-month sentence for violating betting regulations, which was given out only 12 games into his United career. “When we think about Newcastle and Sandro Tonali – they’ve bought a player from AC Milan, and you could argue that Newcastle didn’t do their due diligence,” he remarked. “They have no idea what’s going on in this guy’s personal life.” They’ve spent a lot of money and will lose the player, which should affect them as a club because they didn’t do things correctly. “They shouldn’t then be allowed to go and get, for example, Ruben Neves, a £50 million player on loan for free because they made a mistake.” If they make a mistake, they should bear the consequences.” Following anger from Newcastle fans on social media, the Liverpool icon reaffirmed his Tonali accusations. Carragher also stated that when the club’s transfer business is good, it should embrace criticism as well as appreciation.

“Clubs never tire of telling us how much they look into the backgrounds of potential signings and how much attention to detail goes into it,” he said in a social media response to a Newcastle supporter. “So, if something like this occurs, they can’t complain if people question it.”

“Punished isn’t the right word, but if a team makes a mistake with a player, they shouldn’t be allowed to sign a player on loan (Neves) from a club with which they have links.” That’s not right, which is why there was a PL vote on it, which was passed by clubs affiliated with other clubs.”
