LA Rams name 27 years old experienced star as first offseason signing

The acquisition of Kevin Dotson by the Los Angeles Rams initially appeared to be a move to enhance depth, following a season marred by significant injuries to the offensive line in 2022. However, what seemed like a minor transaction has evolved into a crucial development, with Dotson emerging as a standout player in the starting lineup after just four games. As the Rams approach the offseason, re-signing Dotson should be a top priority, given his exceptional performance.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Dotson currently holds the eighth-highest grade among all linemen and is the leading guard in the NFL after 11 weeks. Despite entering the season as a backup to Joe Noteboom, Dotson has not only secured a starting role but has become the Rams’ most reliable lineman, providing stability along the crucial middle section of the offensive line.

Contrary to his reputation in Pittsburgh, where he was considered better in pass protection than run blocking, Dotson has reversed this narrative in his fourth season. Currently, he ranks as the fourth-highest-rated guard in terms of run blocking, boasting an impressive score of 84.8. Additionally, Dotson has excelled in pass protection, earning a grade of 72.5 and allowing only eight pressures in seven games.

Kevin Dotson's success is proof that it's not just a talent issue on the Steelers OL

The Rams have faced challenges in previous free agency moves along the offensive line, particularly in the 2022 offseason. Letting Austin Corbett go after their Super Bowl victory resulted in a constant shuffle at the right guard position until Dotson’s arrival. Reflecting on this, the Rams should be cautious and prioritize retaining Dotson, especially considering the struggles they’ve faced with players like Coleman Shelton, Joe Noteboom, and Oday Aboushi attempting to fill critical roles.

In the same offseason, the Rams extended contracts to Noteboom and center Brian Allen, both of whom have now become bench players. Noteboom lost his starting position to Alaric Jackson after years of being groomed as Andrew Whitworth’s successor. Allen, once a starter, now serves as the backup to Shelton. These experiences underscore the importance of making informed decisions in free agency, and retaining Dotson should be a lesson learned from past missteps. As the Rams embrace a more physical offensive line presence, Dotson’s contributions have proven invaluable, making his re-signing a crucial move for the team’s future success.
