Atlanta Braves in on blockbuster trade for ace pitcher on MLB trade block

The Atlanta Braves, the reigning National League East champions, have actively pursued top-tier pitchers in both MLB free agency and the trade market this offseason. Despite missing out on Aaron Nola and Sonny Gray, General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is now shifting focus to the trade market.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Braves are among several teams engaged in trade discussions with the Chicago White Sox for ace starter Dylan Cease. The Los Angeles Dodgers are also mentioned as potential suitors. Cease, who is entering his Age-28 season, had an outstanding 2022, finishing as the runner-up for the American League Cy Young with a 14-8 record, a 2.20 ERA, and 227 strikeouts in 184 innings.

Atlanta has been actively seeking a starting pitcher throughout the offseason, re-signing Charlie Morton but still looking to strengthen the rotation. While the Braves had a solid team ERA last season, the addition of another top arm, especially after their loss to the Phillies in the National League Divisional Series, is seen as a priority.

The trade discussions with the White Sox involve the potential acquisition of Cease, but the cost for the Braves is expected to be significant. Cease, entering his second year of arbitration, is projected to earn $8.3 million and is under team control for the 2025 season. Such controllable pitchers entering their prime often command a substantial return in trades.

Hurston Waldrep, currently ranked No. 2 among Braves prospects, is suggested as a potential target for the White Sox in a trade for Cease. As discussions progress, the Braves will need to carefully navigate the negotiations to secure the sought-after pitcher and address their pitching needs for the upcoming season.
