‘Nobody could have it better than to be here,’ says Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh. ANN ARBOR, MI – Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will return to the sidelines when his Wolverines face the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday night.
Harbaugh, who was suspended for the final three games of the regular season, spoke Monday and was questioned about his feelings about returning to game-day head coaching duties. His remark was completely unexpected. Here’s what he had to say:
I comprehend the significance of the attention—my absence being a noteworthy event—but I aim to divert focus towards acknowledging the recent accomplishments, primarily attributed to our team. Perhaps they’ll receive the recognition they deserve. This victory stands as a remarkable testament to both the coaches and the players, particularly in their collective efforts resulting in Michigan’s triumphant and splendid win.
There’s a phrase I often use, one you might already know. I reserve it mainly for interactions with the team or my family: “Who’s got it better than us!?” The expected reply is: “Noooobody!” This saying has been passed down from my father, Jack Harbaugh. It holds more significance than mere words. When I address the team or players using this phrase, what I’m truly expressing to them is that no coach could possibly have a better opportunity than coaching them. Similarly, as a father addressing my kids, it signifies my love language.
When they respond with “Noooobody!” what I interpret is their love for the team, their fellow teammates, and their belief in the program’s direction. They affirm that there’s no better place to be than right here.
So those are my feelings. That’s how I’m feeling right now. Walking up the stairs of Schembechler Hall today and seeing that banner — ‘Those who stay will be champions’ — struck a chord, as it does every day. Our aim of becoming Big Ten East champions has been met. Now comes the task of attempting to win the Big Ten Championship for the third time in a row.
The Wolverines take on the Hawkeyes on Saturday night on FOX in Indianapolis. Michigan is vying for its third consecutive Big Ten Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
